Saying "YES" to Kleinfeld

Yay to my first blog post!!! I am soooo super excited to share my experience with my family, friends, and whoever else decides to read about my daily life in the city. Since this is post one, it's only right that we start at the beginning. I officially leave for NYC in 3... THREE days!! Though I'm nervous, I'm extremely excited to try new things, and get a much needed change of scenery. Before the move, I wanted to write about questions people have been asking me. It's hard, (and time consuming) to get into detail about everything with everyone, so I figured this would be the quickest way to do it! Two frequent questions I get asked a lot are:

1. What made me want to intern at Kleinfeld?

and

2. How did I land such an AMAZING opportunity?

Well, in regards to question one, a friend held an internship position last year at Kleinfeld. I never really considered it because my major isn't fashion. I knew I wouldn't stand a chance in a fashion industry where the demand for work is so competitive and selective. After seeing this friend's pictures of her summer experience, playing dress up in the gowns, meeting amazing celebrities and designers, and being part of the show, I knew what I needed to do. I needed to be apart of the Kleinfeld family. I remember it clear as day. I was in the shower in October getting ready for a Halloween party. When I got out, I thought to myself, "What do I honestly have to lose?" The WORST thing they can tell me is no, right? So with that, I simply applied to the website. After applying, honestly, I forgot about it...(oops). About a month after applying, I sent them an updated resume, ( **cough cough so they didn't forget about me cough** ) and again, didn't think about it. A few months later, I got an email saying I was being considered to be a summer inter, and a face to face interview was necessary. I called my Mom, and she didn't even know I applied! A trip to NYC was soon underway! My Mom kept telling me, "Either way, you walk away a winner. If you don't get the internship, at least you get a girl's weekend with your Mom." Right she was- per usual. We saw Kinky Boots (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED), ate amazing food (we went to Serendipity and had frozen hot chocolate), went to the Statue of Liberty, did the Ellis Island tour, and got to spend quality time with each other, (which was my favorite part by far).

The interview went really well! Joan Roberts, (Head of Sales) is who started the internship program at Kleinfeld. The day before my interview, Joan emailed me saying she would not be in the office for my interview. So not only was my stomach in knots, but it was now falling out of my body. I can't even explain the nerves. One minute I thought I would faint. The next, puke. I was so nervous, I literally dropped all of my wintergreen Tic-Tacs all over the floor (shambles). Walking into Kleinfeld was magical (lol it really was). It was just like the show! I ended up interviewing with a wonderful woman named Kim. She works closely with Joan. My interview was only 10 minutes. I started panicking. Why hadn't they asked me more? I felt confident with myself, but very unsure at the same time. I left it all in the interview. What felt like YEARS passed. About a week and a half later, the email came. It came and I cried. Shocker. I couldn't believe that out of HUNDREDS, I was 1 of 22 selected to be a summer intern. Writing this, I can feel the joy still beaming from my face. Kim explained to me that being a fashion major is great, but if you can't communicate with clients, you honestly won't be considered. Having excellent people skills, being kind and respectful, having an involved resume, and being outgoing are some things Kleinfeld looks for when selecting interns. They are ALL about customer service and the experience when selecting a dress.

In all, this summer is about to be the best yet. I cannot wait to start my internship in only three short days! I am in the process of packing up the last of my stuff. If you have any suggestions, ideas, restaurants, or "musts" that I need to see while in NYC, please comment below. More to come in the future when I actually move into my place. That's all for now! Oh, and attached are some picture from my interview weekend with my Mumma!!

XOXOX
